This article describes the detailed steps taken when, where, how, and why a sewer pipe or "drain line" is replaced. The line which was replaced in this photo-illustrated case runs from the building exterior to a septic tank located downhill from the home. Technical reviewers are welcome and are listed at "References." This is a chapter of Inspecting, Testing, & Maintaining Residential Septic Systems an online book on septic systems. Also see Backups and Clogged Drains diagnosing septic backups and septic system failures versus clogged drains. Replacing the Sewer Line, a Step by Step Photo GuideBecause we were working in a tight space with nearby buildings and power lines, a skilled backhoe operator was essential for the work. The backhoe operator was a master and could probably have moved eggs around without breaking them if he wanted to show off. The old sewer line was excavated and removed from near the house down to near the septic tank using the backhoe. The operator moved the concrete sections of sidewalk aside so that if we wanted, they could later simply be replaced and re-used. (Later we elected to have them removed from the site entirely).
